No podemos escoger lados en un mundo que es redondo. Estamos en él, somos una parte de él, o estamos fuera de él. Cuando tenemos enemigos somos parte de aquellas cosas de las cuales los acusamos. Una enemistad se opone a nuestros intereses o a nuestra posición. Una enemistad es hostil, severa o áspera. Y, ¿qué estamos haciendo mientras todo esto está pasando?. Si las consideramos nuestros enemigos, ¿cómo se nos pueden acercar para aclarar las cosas? Estamos en la mitad de lo que se levanta entre nosotros y nuestro enemigo. No es lo que ellos hayan hecho o dicho, puedan hacer o pudieran hacer; somos nosotros. Son nuestros pensamientos, nuestros juicios, nuestro miedo, nuestra condenación, y si no nos sintiéramos culpables no podríamos atacar a aquellos que llamamos nuestros enemigos. Creemos que el enemigo está equivocado, no es confiable, indigno del amor; nos preparamos para la defensa, proyectando en nuestro enemigo aquellas cosas que nososotros mismos hacemos. Cuando tenemos una enemistad, miremos a nuestro propio odio; comprendamos como nos perturba la hostilidad y preguntémosnos: ¿Quiero realmente atacar lo que más temo?

We cannot choose sides in a round world. We are either in it, a part of it, or we are off. When we have enemies we are a part of the very things we accuse them of. An enemy opposes our interests or position. An enemy is hostile, unkind or unfriendly. And what are we doing while all of this is going on? If we consider them our enemy how can they approach us to get things clear? We are in the middle of what stands between us and our enemy. It is not what they have done or said, can do or might do; it is us. It is our thoughts, our judgments, our fear, our condemnation, and if we did not feel guilty we could not attack those we call our enemy. We believe the enemy is wrong, not be trusted, unworthy of love; we prepare ourselves for the defense, projecting into the enemy the very things we do ourselves. When we have an enemy, let us look at our hatred; let us understand how the hostility disturbs us and ask ourselves, do I really want to attack the very thing I fear?
